Dyslexia is a learning disability and it is protected under IDEA in the American With Disabilities Act. It might fall under the school's definition as a "specific language-based learning disability" and although dyslexia does most profoundly affect reading and writing, there are many other areas affected as well. This has nothing to do with the child's intelligence. Dyslexics usually have an above-average IQ. They are visual-spatial learners who obtain information differently than normal learners. Accommodations, remediation and support need to be put in place. The sooner the better. Don't expect the school to know these things. Get in touch with the International Dyslexia Association and the parent advocacy organization in your area.
