There is an effective system for sight words called "jail."

1. Take a 10 cards and clearly write the words to be learnt on each one.
2. Mark 10 dots under the word
3. Call the first word out for the child to write
4. The child checks the word by comparing it to the card. Note any mistakes and discuss with the child.
5. Go through the whole 10 words in this way.
Every time the child gets the word correct 1 dot is ticked. When it has been correct 10 times that word is put away in an envelope it is now on "probation." It should take about 2 weeks to get 10 ticks.
After 6 weeks take the word out and try again if the child gets it correct it is Free and can be thrown away if not put back into jail and do again. This time add a neumonic sentence and ask the child to draw a picture with lots of colour to help memory.
