I agree that this is a very important decision. I currently have a three year old who has been in early intervention since he was 2, and is now in the school district's special education pre-school. We got him help when he wasn't talking at the normal level for his age. Since he has been in the program, we found out that not only is his expressive language low, but his comprehension is extremely low. His pre school testing reported he had an IQ of 68, which is considered mentally retarded. We were concerned he had brain damage and took him to a state program for further testing, which was completed yesterday. To my surprise, he is not mentally retarded, there is no brain damage, nor is he autistic. He does not have ADD or ADHD. He is dyslexic. For his age the treatment is to get him speech therapy. When he was in the early intervention program he had a wonderful therapist who came to our house twice a month and gave me homework assignments and ideas on how to help him. Now he is in the special education program with the school district and is supposedly getting speech therapy at school. I have never met his therapist. I have no idea what her name is. Whenever I ask his preschool teacher about it, she just tells me it is done in the classroom. I don't get any homework or ideas, and no feedback. He accomplished most the goals on his IEP over the summer before school started just from the work my husband and I do at home. He is in a classroom of 9 children including him. When I drop him off, I get to see the interaction he has with these other 8 children who have widely ranging disabilities. My son is more advanced than the others and this is causing two major problems. The first is that his teacher is ignoring him because he is not a problem child for her. He is very mellow and quiet. The other problem is that he is not being challenged in any way. I found out that after six weeks of school he was being allowed to point and grunt to get what he wanted instead of using his words! I have him in a second private pre school that has 11 other kids with no learning disabilities. He is handling the stress of working up to their level just fine. So my advice to you is find out about the other kids who would be in the special education class as your son. Make sure he isn't the most advanced child. The special education educators are supposed to understand your son better, so it might help his self esteem being there. But I would also continue his private therapy on the side. I have a niece who is also dyslexic and her mother put her in private reading lessons. She is 14 years old now, and is happy in school. Although her reading level is still a little lower and she spells horribly :). I am not sure what I am going to do with my son either. He loves both his pre schools. I am thinking about leaving him in both and hiring a speech therapist on the side for private lessons. I am also thinking about requesting he be moved up with the older kids or to a different class so he is no longer the top of his class. From what I have read and studied on dyslexia (not much since I only found out that is what he has yesterday), the earlier it is detected and helped the better and more successful your child will be. So you are on the right track!
