Hello Debbie

It is difficult for someone to definitively say that your daughter is dyslexic without a test being done to give a diagnosis. The person who does the test should be able to tell you for sure. However, you have stated some indications which show there is a likelihood. For example, the fact that she finds it challenging to read and spell but is strong at drawing. Even with the slightest of indications, I think children should be tested anyway, as it could save her from years of struggling in spite of conscientiousness and the mystery of wondering why.

A test will probably reveal specific areas of weakness and strength so she will know what to work on. It is wonderful that you are looking into this whilst your daughter is still young, can get help from the state and can learn to accept the situation and adjust to it quite early. It also helps prevent delays in the process of understanding how she operates individually. If she is given time to investigate, she can learn about herself as a dyslexic, her weaknesses, areas of strength and make any necessary adjustments to help her operate as efficiently as possible in daily life.

There are measures that can be taken, for example, her predisposition towards drawing may mean she is a "visual learner" and this learning style can be used to help improve in other the areas in which she is not as strong. I do not know about the American system but I am sure there are measures the school can put in place also.

If your daughter is dyslexic, it can be difficult to struggle in subjects like English which have such a high kudos in the education system. Therefore, please remember to remind her of the things she is good at like Maths and Art, etc., her good qualities of character and reward these, even if the school does not enough as it should.

Since everyone is an individual and strengths and weakness vary between dyslexic students, I would suggest that you have an assessment done and then on the basis of the report, you can then find the exact support. There is more awareness now of dyslexia than there used to be and I am sure that if the results show your daughter is dyslexic, through books, articles, courses, forums like these, dyslexia associations, specialists, teachers etc., she can find the information she needs.

I wish you all the best.

Divinia.
