Hi,

Your question is a tough one as each child is individual. I know asking my son a lot of questions helped seeing it from his perspective. If the information is not sent to his brain in a way it can understand it can just cause worse problems, which can be a problem for a parent who is not dyslexic. Also I found removing stress was a HUGE help. It turns out homework was so stressful and so he would completely shut down. Once I removed as much stress as i could he strated remembering homework more often and finding strategies himself to get it done on time.

For example with my son just by agreeing to write the answers for him he has started to be more cooperative to doing homework and seems to bring it home more often!

I would recommend maybe having a photocopy of your son's books so he can do his homework at home if he forgets it? Maybe work with the teacher to ensure they check with him before he leaves the class?

The key is to figure out how your son recieves information. Then approach it that way. For example my son gets over exhausted trying to read to much text so if he has to read I retype it in a format that he feels he can handle or I read it out loud to him and he answers questions. He cannot do math problems from right to left as we are supposed to so I let him do it left to right and he gets it right. If he has to read we choose silly voices and he enjoys it a lot more by making it more interactive. Or I read certain lines and he reads certain lines.

Correcting grammar is a tough one...grammar is memory based and so for dyslexics it can be a challenge. Maybe get him to use playdough to form the words everyone keeps telling me that one helps a lot?
