Hi Russell,

I consider dyslexia testing more or less a waste of time for the simple reason that once the diagnosis is made, about all that is usually suggested is that accommodations be made.

In my opinion, a teenager who is having trouble with reading is probably dealing with an undiagnosed, and therefore untreated, vision problem of the sort addressed by vision therapy.

In the U.S. you would take such a child to a developmental optometrist for a diagnosis, and have him undergo vision therapy (at considerable personal expense) if the need was indicated by testing.

In the UK, however, I believe you have professional "orthoptists" in your health service. I would seek one out, preferably one who has an active vision therapy practice, and get the child's vision skills evaluated. I believe that vision therapy might then be covered by your health service, though I'm not sure of that.

The time spent doing this will, in nearly every case of dyslexia, be more profitably spent than will the time spent seeking an official diagnosis of "dyslexia" in my opinion.

Take a look at The Vision Piece of the Dyslexia Puzzle on my website for a lot more information.

You might also want to take a look at the information I've recently added on Vitamin D3 as well under The Diet Piece.
