I am so sorry you are going through this! I have been there myself and the best advice I ever received was to search outside the school district for a place that would do the battery of tests to determine a diagnosis. Like you, my husband and his father are also dyslexic, so we knew what the issue was. But we also wanted to know his strengths, weaknesses, problem areas and potential so that we were setting the correct expectations and hopefully ready for the problem areas. The schools are not required to do the extensive testing that you will get at an outside facility. They are only required to see if your child qualifies for special services. They do not distinguish what type of disability he may have. Further, getting a formal diagnosis may give you leverage in getting services or help if you can show them the official report from a certified source. Good luck!
