I would suggest you look into an advocacy group in your area. Being rural, there may not be one. You may want to try the closest urban area to you. Most urban areas have Advocacy groups for those with special needs. These are valuable resources and can direct/guide you. Often they are overwhelmed with the demand for their services so you may have to plead your case and be persistent. Even if they can't help you directly, they may be able to give you a contact of someone closer to your location. As a student in the public education system your child has a 'federal given' right to have her needs met. Sometimes school aren't aware of all interventions that are needed and sometimes they are but they are not willing to implement them or pay to have them implemented. It is my understanding Federal law requires them to implement any intervention that is deemed necessary for the education of that child. I strongly recommend having a professional advocate of some type (Special ed advocate, doctor, counselor, etc.) on your side and if possible having that person attend these IEP's with you. Another bit of advice... any follow up expected from IEP's have more 'legal' power if they are in writing and even sent by way of registered letter. Schools have to be sensitive to these issues due to the federal law regarding children with special needs. I wish you the best of luck. I am beginning this venture with my daughter who may have dyslexia, so I am still learning about the assessment process and interventions. It seems like there are many different viewpoints on this learning disability which are already frustrating. Stay persistent in your mission to fight for your daughter's education.
