My son is 36 now and was classified at age 8 in 3rd grade. I tried to read every article available at the time and one word we used most was "compensate". Having a hard time to read a clock - a digital clock/watch works great now for him. He couldn't process two requests at a time - go get your slacks out of the dryer and get me a loaf of bread out of the freezer. I would have to write him a list and he could get everything for me. If he had spelling words to learn, he could do that but if he had to learn spelling words and meanings, too hard for him. The best thing I ever learned was from a senator's wife that wrote and article about studying for exams in college. She would study for hours - go to sleep - wake up in the morning and she couldn't remember anything. She got a tape recorder and taped the info she needed. Went to sleep and played the recorder back in the morning (at breakfast)so the info was fresh in her mind for the day. That worked wonders for my son. Spelling words and meanings worked great from a tape recorder. I have alot more suggestions but too many to print. He went on to the local Vo-Tech school and ended up a pastry chef - three scholarships to Johnson & Wales and now is an executive pastry chef at a FL private club for multi-million dollar condo owners. If you would like more info call me: 727-289-6240 or email me. It's a long process to find out what works for kids and what doesn't work. My son had trouble reading but once I found out he liked karate - I bought karate magazines and he read every word. He went on the be a 3rd degree black belt. Individual sports are better for dyslexics we found. He couldn't remember a series of commends but he took second place in a state karate competition in doing over 60 kick movements. Sometimes if the interest is there, they can accomplish anything. :) Carol Potzinger
