I know it is far from being the same as being there and working with the child first hand. It is easy to come up with all sorts of things that dont work while you are struggling to find what does.

The best answer I can think of is working with counting from 1-9, which it sounds like the child has down. Then also working with counting by 10s, you know 10, 20, 30, 40 and so on.

Once they have these two down, then have them doing each in reverse.

All the while you are showing them how they relate to each other. Maybe with a visual peace of paper you typed out in rows and columns. Each row is a count in the 10s. and each column is a count in the 1s.

Color coat each row with its own color so to separate them even more from all the other numbers.

Count them out like a game. Each time you all compete them you can yell yeyyyyy ,clap your hands, a big smile, hug and what not. So the reward is not so much about if they get them right, but that they are playing the game and you get the reward each time you finish some type of count. The will most likely then see it as a short and fun game which they will always get parse for, rather than some hard. difficult and almost imposable task which you seem worried and disappointed about.

This way we are using many psychological cognition learning techniques to assist the child in learning this skill, repetition, origination/structure, visual and textual, and positive feedback..

You may also want to play with other variations as well. Such as you can look for different font to use the numbers in. The fonts may be fun looking like some are shaped and colored like different animals, ice cream cones and such. Have your child be a part of the suggestions to what they enjoy most. By doing so they have a say in what they may want so to make the game more fun, and potently add variety when ever the child may want so to not lose interest, but also not to change too quickly for them any difference that could potently throw them off.
