Teaching a dyslexic child the alphabet or phonics is a very tasking job. being visual learners it is always best to relate a letter to an object. The success to this exercise is the involvement of the student. Take the alphabet select a number of letters, write these letters on square cards in lower case the ask the child what sound they make, offer help if the child is struggling. Then ask what thing, animal starts with that letter. Example show the child t and ask for something that starts with t, they possibly could say tree praise them for their correct answer and offer them a similar square card and ask them to draw a tree. Continue with this practise for all the letters. Once you have these prepared you can lay out all or some at a time and ask them to match the pictures they made with the letters then together talk through them t for tree c for cat q for queen. I did this exercise with my child and it worked wonders. This kind of approach can be incorporated right through a dystlexic childs education.
