I totally understand what you are saying. I too had a son who could not read and refused to read due to it being a frustrating task. Having got the needed support he needed he is now able to read much better but tires easily. Reading novels was too tasking for him and he soon lost either interest or the story line. His support teacher introduced to us a reading scheme called Oxford - Read Write Inc. These are short stories ranging around 15 pages that are funny and interesting and what is even better is the books are designed to support the phonics as well as at the end there are some questions to ask the child. Using these books my son is able to finish 3 a week which has raised his confidence. Why not check out their web site www.oxfordprimary.co.uk and see if you find something to help you.
