I have been a teacher for almost thirty years and in SEN for four years. Reading your comments about the Certificate Course and Keith's reply made me want to comment as well. I really do wonder why certain people ever become teachers. So many seem to get a real "kick" out of belittling students who clearly struggle. My daughter used to be called up to the board at age 7 and told to count to 20, she, of course, failed and the teacher thought it was hilarious and even told me herself - my daughter incidentally is dyslexic. It is so important to try and support these children who just happen to learn in a different way. It does not mean that they are "failures"or "stupid" but they do require additional help and support. I feel proud of the school I work in as we have really focused on the Special Needs Department where children with dyslexia and other difficulties receive a temendous amount of support. One of the most imiportant things we can give these children is a feeling of security and not failure, build their self esteem and not make them feel different. It can be done and quite easily too but we, the teachers, are the ones who can do it and it is time that all teachers took a different view of learning difficulties. I ensure that the children feel happy and know that they can always come back to me for any h elp they want and they do return, they ask for help and realise that we are not there to attack and punish them. Do not be afraid to provide dyslexic children with as many tools as necessary for them to achieve. Happiness, confidence and success are key to a dyslexic child acheiving whilst at school.
