Hi Donna
In terms of decoding (reading) and encoding (spelling), it is only important to know the letter sounds and NOT the letter names.

The research indicates that we remember and learn best when we use a multisensory approach (visual, auditory and tactile), that we integrate the information we are learning, we link new knowledge to existing knowledge and that we have multiple opportunities for rehearsal.

So, I would recommend that you link each of the letters to a word that begins with the sound of the letter (/a/ apple, /b/ bat and ball, /c/ cat) and that the words you choose can be easily represented by a picture and also looks like the shape of the letter. For example, if you write the letter ‘a’ and then add leaves it looks like an apple - /a/ for apple. In other words, you are using visual imagery. Present this information in the form of an action song which includes the child not only drawing the shape of the letter but also representing the object in some physical way – i.e. you are incorporating all the senses.

If you use objects with which the child is familiar, then you will be linking new knowledge to existing knowledge and if you sing the action song whenever you can throughout the day, you will be providing multiple opportunities for rehearsal.
