I had major issues with my older son, dyslexia, and a public school district in Houston, TX. When my youngest son was 18mths old we put him in ECI (Early CHild Intervention. 3 yrs old speech therapy. 4 yrs old privately tested and bam, major red flags for dyslexia. School would not accept the private testing. They kept saying, "We will test him when it's warranted." I was told Pre-K there were no problems. Kindergarten no problems. 1st grade, wait we have a problem. I was told he had the reading level of that of a Pre-k student. Really? Hmmmm? Amazing since the last 2 yrs you told me there were no problems. Then the school asked if they could use my private testing. At this point my husband and I pay for a private dyslexia specailist (CALT)to help both boys. Our oldest is 17yrs and goes to The Briarwood School. Amazing, organized, proof is in the pudding type of school. Our little one went from being the worst reader to now being the best reader. Sometimes though he doesn't comprehend everything he reads but we have strict modifications in place. Since the school knows we supplement with a dyslexia specialist on the side he does not qualify for any of there services. That is just fine with me because what I can get done privatley would take a total 2 yrs to get done in the public school system.

Now there are some great public schools that do offer amazing programs but don't hold your breath if your going to wait for them to help you.

If you want email me (chris@iwjg.com) and I will forward you to a contact person from the Neuhaus here in Houston to see if they know of a person or school in your area to start with the child in question.

Believe me I wasted too many years on my oldest listening to the teachers. "Oh, don't worry he'll catch up. It's just a boy thing." A private school told me in 1st grade our oldest was dyslexic and I was in denial. Then 4th grade bit us in the bootie and all heck broke lose in public school. Now I kick myself for the years I wasted waiting for someone else to "fix" my kid. DON'T WAIT!!!
