My nine year old daughter was just diagnoised with Dyslexia. She is in third grade now. I understand the fustrations with the schools. Her school insisted she had ADHD and I knew that was not it. I have fought tooth and nail with the school for my daughter to be evaluated. I had been to our family doctor, who agreed with the school and tried to medicate her for ADHD. This did not make a bit of difference. I used the only tool available to me and that was the internet. I found a place that specialized in dyslexia and took my daughter to them. They tested her for dyslexia. Took the results to the school and had to go through the school district to insists they give my daughter an evaluation. I finally got the evaluation to take place through her school but it has not been done to my knowledge yet. I have my daughter in tutoring with a person who specializes in working with dyslexic children. Do not give up on your son. I have learned we as parents have to be the advocate for our children. The schools should be more equipped to pick up on learning disabilities but I have also learned most states do not have laws in place and rely solely on the federal guidlines for any learning disability. Schools also receive money for physically disabled children so of course they will bend over backwards for those students. Learning disabilities though get the shaft. It is a real shame because a learning disability does not mean a child is dumb or cannot learn. It just means that they are wired a different way from us or are we wired a different way from them. Hang in there and give them all the love you can. It will get better.
