I guess just being honest with whoever you start a relationship with up front is the best way. It's good that you recognize that you might hurt someone. Some people go through life not caring who they step on or hurt.

With enough disappointments and hurts behind me, I'm working really hard to maintain a sense of aloofness (I guess that's the best word for it) In spite of myself, sometimes I can't help but get attached to people, but I think I make a conscious effort to keep them at arm's length, not because I don't care, but usually because I tend to care too much and that's led to a lot of hurt feelings.

I'm glad you and your ex are on good terms. Any children involved?

My mom has cousins in the Napa area and all over California and Oregon. The only ones I've met in CA are the ones in Napa.
