I think you are very wise to confront the past so as to free yourself of its bondage over your present life. And I am VERY happy that your dad wants to try and build a relationship. I think it is a blessing for both of you. He is very lucky to have a loving son like you. And no, I do not think that our basic need for closeness in our family relationships are co-dependent. Just be really careful to stay in tune to your own needs and feeling along the way. And know that you have a support system. People care very much about you. I had bad experiences with my dad as a child because he was an alcoholic (guess that is where I learned my co-dependent behaviors). But when I entered high school he stopped drinking and we have had years to build better memories. I pray that you have this chance as well.

What you say about our culture and fathers is very interesting. I'd love to hear more about that.

Take care, Jon.

Love,

Michele
