Subject: Hi Boardmates!

Just wanted to say hi.

Why do people like Mac now? Because Meg's chracter was not given enough time to develop. But Tracey's chemistry with David was more powerful and natural than his interactions with Catherine Bell. This whole Mac-and-Harm stroyline came about because the writers insisted on it.

But had the producers stuck with Tracey, I'm pretty sure we'd have lots of Meg-Harm shippers and Col. Mackenzie might be non-existent at all.

I think this board, and this ssite (even though its founder is missing) is testament to the fact that the Meg-Harm relationship was instantly likeable and that a lot of people felt shortchanged when Meg was taken out of the picture. I've seen both season 1 and seasons of Meg-less JAG and you always get the feeling that the Kate-Harm "romance" and the Mac-Harm "romance" is always being set up by the producers.

But the romantic undertones of the Meg-Harm relationship were always present, even if the writers tried their best to nip it in the bud by bringing out Kate Pike in two episodes that diminished Meg's screen time. This Mac-Harm romance had the benefit of dead-girlfriend doppelganger and a totally clean slate in CBS to work with, to push the idea. The Meg-Harm romance sprouted on its own, despite the fact that Kate's shadow was always looming in the background (that is, the NBC pilot plus those two other season one episodes that featured Bellisario favorite Andrea Parker).

The NBC honchos were right in diagnosing the problem in teh JAG pilot -- zero chemistry. So they solved it with Tracey Needham (see the Entertainment Weekly review). But Bellisario wanted to have his way so Meg's character was not given due attention.

When they moved to CBS, the chemistry factor was back at zero but this time they totally eradicated the traces of Harm's two former partners like they never appeared on TV, and made this Diane (who, luckily for the producers, looked like Mac) character some kind of gaping wound for Harm. The look and tone of the show changed radically and the chemistry issue was manufactured out of that.

JAG is not a hit now because of Catherine Bell. It works now because the producers decided to tell their stories better and have the female lead do more than just support DJE's character.
