Among the more obviously tragic events of last evening, a tragedy for the arts world.

Noted poet and Nobel-candidate novelist Gabriela Prieto disappeared from her East Village apartment last night. According to neighbors, Prieto was dragged from her home midway through last night's riots. No ransom demands have yet been received.

Despite the lack of evidence, there is no shortage of candidates who might have wished Prieto ill -- most notably the Roman Catholic Church, whose policies in her home country of Brazil she harshly criticized. Bishop John Loughlin has denied any involvement of Opus Dei, but the secretive right-wing group has yet to comment on this terrible event.
