Nessa had slept fitful, unwinding herself from the young ones that she had allowed to crawl into her silken bed, in hopes of chasing the demons away that seemed to be haunting her sleep. In the hazy shadows of the very early morn, she dressed in the loose fitting leathers. Strange how even the silence felt deeper, more profound now that she had distanced herself from the baby. She didn't allow herself to think about last night. How the knowledge had came to her, this child she carried was an enity she didn't understand. That already it exercised a strange control over her, and not only over her but perhaps those about her. Had the sand been Burgoo..or had the babe made sure nothing harmful came to it? She was sure Becca's strange behavior to convince her this baby loved her, even driving the girl past what would be considered proper for a slave, was the manipulation of the baby. All this had terrified her. Cricket had seemed to know, to understand even though Nessa had struggled to find the words to explain, even though she had sounded like a crazy woman.
She belted the wicked looking dagger and sheath to her left thigh, fingers brushing dark sable strands from the sleeping Lizzy's face, her rusty pools caressing Abby, before she turned and left the the chamber through the the arched balcony doorway, sure footed steps, their sound hushed by that soft leather that covered them wound her through the garden and towards the back of the villa. Had she not been in such a pensive, dark mood, the look on Gilda's face when she entered the kitchen, already fragrant with the smells of fresh baking bread, would have brought a laugh to escape her lips, but there was no joy in the task she was about to embark upon. Only acknowledging Gilda's soft spoken greeting with a simple nod, she moved to the hearth, earthenware mug in hand, pouring the steaming black coffee in the mug, taking a hesitant sip as if she dared the babe to defy her, to once more exercise its hold over her. All she tasted was the strong, bitter flavor of the coffee, a smile as if she had won a small battle crossed her lips.
Earthenware mug in hand she moved to the small arched door that lead down, down into what as a child had been hell. She stood there, free fingers toying with the key in the pocket of her leathers, staring at that door as if it would open and gobble her up. Gilda's soft, worried voice snapped her mind from the past back into the present.
"You be ok Lass?"
Nessa inhaled softly before she looked over her shoulder at the face that had so changed, gone was the wrinkled old woman, in her place stood the beautiful pleasure slave of her grandfather. So many changes, but she didn't have time to think about that now, she offered the worried woman a smile and a few words.
"Yes Gilda...I'm fine..."
The key turned in the lock, the tumblers dropping into place as if it had not been more than a year sense this door was opened. It was the back way into the lower regions of the villa. What did Nessa expect to find? Did she expect to meet the ghosts of hundreds still screaming and moaning? Still chained and locked in cruel manacles to walls and tables of torture? Would the bright glow of crimson mock her rusty hues from stained floor and walls? Would they rush at her? Assult her mind? Damn her for not saving them sooner? She found none of this as she stepped into her father's region of hell, only a deep sense of saddness and loss for those that had suffered, for those that she could not save. Silence...there were no demons, no haunted ghost, no lost souls still roaming the dank, dark halls of the devil's playground.
She sipped the last few swallows of the bitter coffee, as her gaze met and assessed these regions. These region that no longer had the power to hold her in the grip of her terrified childhood. Yes, she thought, with a few changes this would be perfect for Sho. As if in rejection of that thought the baby moved. But Nessa had already faced more demons then this child even knew existed, and her soft whispers echoed into the dank, shadowy halls.
"Get used to it Calyssa...your father has a lot to teach you about the world your soon to be born too..."
The mug dangling in her fingers she made her way back up that spiral staircase into the warm, fragrant kitchen. A new, reborn Nessa coming from those regions of silence. A Nessa that made an arch come to the beautiful brow of Gilda as commands were given in tones that made it quite clear she had left the frightened little girl behind.
"The lower regions are to be stripped and cleaned, nothing but marble floors and walls are to be left. Make sure that NO one that remembers my father's reign, or the hell he wrought is set to this task, even if you have to hire outside help...and I want it done within the week..."
The mug was set to wooden table as those same sure footed strides took her to the door that lead out into the herb garden and stable grounds, her last words tossed over her shoulder to the still stunned Gilda.
"If anyone asked for me...tell them I went to get the Baroness..."
The sun was barely begining to chase away the night shadows as she came into the stableyard and stood looking up towards that awakening sky, that doused the light of the midnight stars. She was still smiling as she hollered.
"Shard....wake your lazy ass up...we're going to get the Baroness..."
