I think Bud has seen enough in his life that he can be compassionate to people. He's had his share of crap but he seems to be able to learn from it, accept it and put it behind him unlike some other people at JAG, ie Harm. Nothing specifically against Harm, but everyone can admit that he is a *touch* obsessive. ;-)

Even when Bud was first starting out, and a little insecure, AJ was very confident in him. Like in that one ep where Bud tells AJ that he knows he still has a lot to learn and AJ says (after Bud leaves) not as much as you think? There's also that time when AJ pointed out to Bud that he came to alw late in life, but Bud is lucky to have found his calling early. I have to admit that I think a little small bit of the bumbling Bud is kind of cute. Not a lot. For example in Lifeline. I think it would have been more than enough if he had the stain on his tie. The rest was unnecessary. He had such sweet intentions to dress up for Harriet and him losing the tie would have been enough I think.
