When I was an apprentice at a newspaper office some 40 years ago we had in addition the the stanndard Ludlows an old Linotype machine that had been stripped down of the magazines and keyboard, leaving the mould wheel, metal pot and cams, this had been converted to accept a Ludlow stick that clamped in front of the Mould wheel containing a 12 pt. mould, it thus produced a perfect "Chadlow" slug. The "splash" when we got one was horrendous I am sure Health and Safety regulations would not allow it today. It was called a "Chadlow" because it was named after a brilliant engineer we had by the name of Chadwick. He built all manner of devices. One was an overhead conveyor belt that went from the Linos down to the Stone to carry proofs and correction slugs, made up from Dexion Iron, not forgetting the "stones" made up from the same product with Formica and blockboard on top, remarkably they carried four or five newspaper chases on them and lasted years. I just remembered the company cat called Charlie who was found many times in the mornings curled up asleep either on the cams or inside the cams near the metal pot, incidentally he never got killed, he just died of old age, should have been called "lucky", he was also black so didn't show the dust and grease marks. Those were the days, the rest of my working life is sitting in front of a computer screen still at the same company.
