Edwin, I'm sorry to hear you've been displaced. My best advice as a former phototypesetter operator, whose trade was entirely eliminated by desktop publishing, is to upgrade your skills to meet the demands of the contemporary labor market. This probably means going to trade school or college; perhaps, depending on where you live, your government can help with tuition and expenses for retraining.

When it became obvious my trade would soon disappear, I tossed it all away and studied journalism. Think for a minute -- is there anything in the newspaper these days that is written any better than you could do yourself? I didn't think so. It takes brains, good English skills and a literate frame of mind to be a good lino man, which is more than they seem to ask of reporters nowadays.

Sad to say, but if you are determined to be a linotype operator until the day you die, your best bet will be to find a museum with a linotype machine, so you can demonstrate to visitors how it used to be done.
