In reply to: Keith Prentice 's message, "Ex Linotype Operator" on 09:30:29 12/06/01 Thu

I served my apprenticeship as a Linotype Operator/Mechanic at the Manawatu Daily Times in Palmerston North and following that worked for the Levin "Chronicle" where I met Keith Prentice when he was installing a Star Quadder on a Linotype model 32. In 1961 I travelled to the UK with a letter of introduction to Intertye in Slough. I worked there for about six months as a tester, checking that the machines being built were performing OK. I was offered a full-time job there but turned it down. In 1965 I returned to NZ and worked for a trade tyesetter in Palmerston North before starting my own business in Levin. I had three Intertypes, a Ludlow, Elrod, saw and Foundry pot for remelting used type. I returned to the UK in 1977 and worked on Linotype keyboards punching tape for a Photosetter then in 1980 went to Parliamentary Press in London on piece-work. Transferred to Miles33 system 400 in 1985.
My e-mail is: kiwi2dan@aol.com. Love to hear from Keith if he reads this.
