I think that the unions only reflected the views of the members. These views were generally Luddite. I joined Linotype-Paul in Kingsbury in 1979 from a Scottish Daily newspaper. I thought that I could join the local branch of the NGA . . . no chance. I ended up in the "unattached" branch. If people like myself who worked for the companies producing the technology had been given the opportunity to contribute properly to the activities of the NGA, the union might have had the opportunity to negotiate from a position of knowing what was on the horizon rather than reacting to events. By the way I can also recall being harassed at exhibitions by comps and operators who reckoned that I was doing them out of their jobs. If the technology had been embraced properly things might have been different.
