Tony, Your mention of Cyril Pryke does ring a bell, although he had retired by the time I got there in 1977. He apparently used to have his students dismantling and then re-erecting the machines. I learnt this from George, the Linotype technician. George really knew his stuff where Linotypes were concerned, and we'd often go to our allocated machine to find a label hanging on it which read "DO NOT USE"! Oh S***, theory again! The lecturer at the time was Graeme Heginbotham. There were seven machines in the room at that time: one Intertype C4; and six Linotypes, i.e. two pre-war Model 48 machines, one post-war Model 48, a Model 48SM, a Model 50 (mixer), and a Model 79 which had TTS equipment. What halcyon days!
