''The NGA should have taken it on the chin in a more honourable manner'' . . . absolute rubbish. I'm not here to fight the cause of the NGA, they made mistakes, of course they did. But the main issue is being missed by a mile. Those jobs were ours . . not the scabs from the electrical unions. THAT'S WHAT THE FIGHT WAS ABOUT.

Let's go back a few years to the Messenger dispute. 'Eddy' Shah was a member of the NGA. He used the NGA's technical knowledge to help him kit out his various plants in Carlisle and Stockport and Warrington.

After gleaning all the knowledge and advice that was available and also being lucky enough to employ 6 dilligent typesetters from the Stockport branch, he then turned nasty.

He figured, rightly so, that he could employ people for less money and get rid of union involvement. From a business point of view I've no doubt it was applauded by the guys in suits in Fleet Street. Morally of course, it was a disgrace. Still, Maggie was pleased because it set up the downfall of the strongest union of the day.

I know all the details of what happened at Winwick Quay, I was directly involved, but that story is for another time and place, but please, don't talk to me about ''honour'', that went out of the door when the police snatch squads were throwing people into the meat wagons and giving them a good kicking. ''Honour''?

People who don't know the facts REALLY should refrain from venting their opinions.

For those who were involved in the disputes I take my hat off to you. For those who weren't and think they know what happened . . . keep it to yourself.
