When I was an apprentice back in the 50s we were trained on Linotype, monotype keyboard and caster. The caster room was about 20 yards away from the mono keyboard and linotype room. The compressed air supply for keyboards and caster were situated in the caster room. As you may well know when the air supply was cut off it caused absolute chaos with the casting machine causing it to jam up and stop. In the keyboard room we used to disconnect the air hose to let all the pressure out of the air cylinder. This used to jam the caster. As soon as we heard the curses emanating from the caster room we immediately reconnected the hoses. By the time someone had run down the passage from the caster room the air supply had built up enough to run the keyboards and we were innocently keying away nineteen to the dozen and of course vehemently denying any responsibility for the carnage in the caster room.
