The alloy used on Linotype/Intertype machines is known as "Linotype Metal". It is composed of three separate metals, i.e. lead 85%, tin 3% and antimony 12%. Lead is the base metal, tin gives hardness, and antimony (which expands when it cools) is used to counteract the contraction of the tin and lead when the slugs cool down after casting. Machines are set so that the metal in the pot is between 500 and 525 degrees Fahrenheit (around 275 degrees Centigrade if I remember correctly!). I know a source of Linotype Metal here in the UK, but perhaps some of this site's American visitors may be able to point you in the right direction in the USA.
