Gday gents and ladies,
Just a bit re the scab plant and its owner.
Originally set up for hot metal with six linotype Automatics ( plate casting machines ). These were of a type like no other in Fleet St. being two casting units fed from one pot. I believe the scab marshal had to get these from all around the world. There was a large master pot with about six ton of metal in it with a railway system for the blacks to be fed into it from the machine room and the metal then pumped to the casting units. The shavers were also in place but not secured to the floor or fully plumbed in we were asked to go over to the plant and within reason get the shavers positoned in the best place for ease of working with them. The Foundry Dept. were probably two meetings away from an agreement to man this set up with an increase of staff to cover the additional requirements. There was to be no origination at Wapping the setting being done in the old plant in Fleet St. and the moulds being taken over to Wapping for casting. Also at this time no mention of new technology the whole plant was to be hot metal .The original tower wall on the left hand side looking towards the south was a soft wall with the provision for a further six auto's to be installed and another press hall on that side as well for the future expansion of the plant.
No offence ment by my term for the used plates that was what they were called

Yours
