LINOTYPES SAIL THE SEVEN SEAS
I must admit that this discussion about UK- and USA-built Linotype and Intertype machines is of my initiation. Many passenger liners had a ship's printer to print Captain's Table invitations, menu variations, and all sorts of other bits and pieces, but the equipment often consisted of a few type cases, a platen press, and other sundry items. The big posh ships must also have had typesetting by mechanical means. A bloke called Bruce Anderton (well known in line casting circles, as well as at the Cockermouth Printing Museum in Cumbria, England) had a call from an American printer, who wanted some English strike depth matrices. When the ex-Cunard liner Queen Mary was being re-vamped, he'd bought the British-built Linotype Model 48 from on board, and American-made matrices were not suitable, thus the call to Bruce. I just wondered if fellow operators knew of the differences between UK and USA machines, and why they had come about. Perhaps the boffins in our midst may care to enlighten us!
