I was in the NGA from 1965 when I left school to 1976 when I left the trade. Was surrounded by Linotypes and then became an operator. Asbestos may I vaguely recall have been used as an insulating material, - was it on the exterior of the metal pot? My slight worries over the years have been based on working with lead/tin/antimony, and also a product called Benzene was used for a time for cleaning magazines and matrices, moulds etc. where I worked, until the health hazards (cancer causing) were realised. The danger being the number of guys that smoked heavily all day, and everyone having to breathe this cocktail. Fortunately to this day (nearly 54 now) have never had any problems I personally could attribute to the trade. Both papers I worked for are now part of the Guardian Media Group. I am surprised and interested to know that a 'descendant' union of the NGA exists! - and shall be looking up mesothelioma too.
