Frank,
I accidentely came across your message while while browsing the internet.
Your story sounds much like mine. I worked my way through college running Linotype and Intertype for the Telegram Tribune newspaper in San Luis Obispo, California, USA. Also learned the Elrod & Ludlow - if you are familiar with them.
I presently own a small shop in Sacramento, California which I am hoping to sell soon so I can retire.
One of my biggest headaches is customers bringing in disks full of jobs they have tried to set themselves on their computers. Usually these turn into impossible to work with nightmares. Wrong software programs, type faces not included etc.
At least in the "good old days" no customer ever said, "Say, I just bought a Linotype and I'll bring you 1,300 pounds of lead I set myself."
