The Showcard {Press) Company made presses that looked like proof presses. The type (wood or metal) has a left to right slot in the back. This slot is so you can take the letters and place them side by side on a notched rail. Little spring clips hold the string of letters where ever you want them. There are notches in the sides of the press bed to accept these rails. There is no type lockup on these presses except for these rails, notches, and spring retainers. The slot is also used to keep the type aligned on the "special" type case frame.
I still have a couple of these type rack and a fair amount of type.
These presses were in use by a lot of the stores like Macy's, Bradlees, JM Fields, and other general merchandise retailers. The signs over the clothing sales were made with these presses.
