Try a few simple things first:

Ensure that the heads and pinch roller are clean.

Tape must be in contact with the head in order to play it back. Examine the tape(s) to be sure that the felt pressure pad has not become dislodged. Also, if the spring which pulls the head forward during play has broken, there will be a similar effect.

Insert a blank cassette that can be recorded upon, press PAUSE, then exercise the RECORD and PLAY buttons several times. (You can do this with power off.) There is a switch operated only when in Record; its contacts can corrode and prevent tape information from reaching the amplifier and playback circuits.

Listen for a squeal from the cassette as it plays. Excess friction (possibly caused by uneven winding of the tape inside the housing) will slow the tape down so much that signal recovery is impossible. (This usually occurs at one end of the tape or the other, but if the tape is not evenly wound on the spools, it can happen anywhere.) One should always run a tape to its full extent before taking it out of the deck, either in Play, Rewind or Fast Forward, to help avoid this problem. An early symptom of this is a flickering of the Sync indicator.
