First, see whether the playback head fully engages the tape (it should slightly enter the cassette shell). When playback goes bad, also try adjusting the tempo control slowly to each of its extremes and let us know if that seems to make a difference. With a blank cassette loaded, try putting the tape deck in RECORD mode, then stop it, repeating this about 20 times.
