There have been some questions here and there asking how PvP was impacted with the coming of Age of Shadows. Here’s a short Q&A that tries to help explain some of the reasoning behind some of those changes.
Question: There are players saying that Ultima Online is more item-based than skill-based now. Is that true?
Answer: Items definitely impact UO more than they used to, but the game isn’t necessarily more item-based than skill-based these days since you’ll need both items and skills to be as effective as possible. Low-skill characters that are loaded up with the best items can be formidable, but they’ll never have the same potential as their high-skill counterparts. The difference these days lies in that you have more options in character development, both long-term with skills and short-term with item management.
Question: Why are stats no longer counted when determining success for skills?
Answer: In the past, many players have been puzzled by the “real” and “modified” skill values, and a frequent question asked by players was, “Do you mean real or modified skill?”
Age of Shadows brought a great deal of complexity into the UO combat system with Age of Shadows—new skills, spells, special moves, items & item properties, etc.—and we felt it was important to balance the learning curve and intricacy of combat by simplifying other aspects. With this in mind, we lowered the complexity of the skill system by allowing Stats to only influence degree of success, and not the initial chance of success.
Since AoS, players only have one relevant number to watch regarding their skills (the real one), rather than two (a real one, and a modified one), which we feel will be a lot less confusing overall.
Question: There’s been some pretty big changes to resist — is magic resist ever going to be changed to be more like it was before?
Answer: It’s already part of our plan to continue checking back on the AoS changes, and it’s probable that we may be taking a more critical look at the Magic Resist skill in the near future.
