Some very good advice but there remains one or two things that I am able to add.

Even better than an invis item in your bank is an invis item on your corpse. Many are the times that I have dashed to my fallen corpse, grabbed set of crazy antlers from my body and slapped them on my bald noggin before surrounding monsters had a chance to react. Once invisible retrieving your equipment is a simple matter, even with a dragon breathing down your neck.

Of course, for a provoker, the ultimate in corpse retrieval equipment is the humble newbie instrument. An instant after ressurection, a provoker with a newbie lute is able to strum that annoying tune we know so well driving monsters into an insane frenzy. The provoker can then safely approach the waiting corpse while his foe are otherwise occupied.

Avoid the use of nightsight items in dangerous places. There is nothing worse than leaving the grey land and finding yourself in a pitch black one. The effects of nightsight potions and spells endure beyond death, but the effects of nightsight items are instantly gone when the item is removed. (like when it is left behind on your corpse)

If you know you are doomed, try to make it to a safe place before you croak. Sometimes you have to accept the inevitable; you are going to die.

For example, you may be down to your last 5 HP in Destard when that wyvern gets a lucky hit and upsets your blood/venom ratio. Or you may have a completely red health bar when a dragon fires that little flame dart at you. You know what is coming next. You can stay and hope for a miracle or you can make a dash for the exit. If you make it outside, corpse retrieval is much easier, you can avoid looters and you may even save Drumstick your favourite ostard.
