They are a christian band, if you notice every referrence to biblical stuff, every song title, you can't tell yourself they are not Christian.
Take a look at "all that you can't leave behind" : elevation, grace, peace on earth...
and I agree on the fact that they tend to be more catholics than protestants.
Ok they don't play christian music, but a lot of songs are deeply rooted in more or less concious religious chirstian(sometimes catholic) themes...
Anyway, they are the best.
