I wouldn't call them an up front Christian band as they don't sing stuff like "hallelujah" and "bless the lord" but they deffinately have a Christian theme in the majority of their songs. There are so many references to Christianity especially in the new album. I don't know if this is what the words are supposed to mean but here's what I think.

In Beautiful Day on of the lines is "after the flood all the colours came out". This is talking about when God flooded the world in the old testament and then made a rainbow in the sky as a promise that He would never flood the world again.

"Love, lift me out of these blues
Won't you tell me something true
I believe in you". here Bono is asking God to help him out in life and talk to him to help him to get rid of "these blues".

"A place that has to be believed to be seen"
This is from Walk On and is a description of Heaven 'cos you can't get in unless you believe in God.

Peace On Earth is Bono talking to God and getting annoyed about all the bad stuff going on in the world.

"So I try to be like you
try to feel it like you do
but without you it's no use
I can't see what you see
when I look at the world" from When I Look At The World is Bono saying that he tries to feel the pain that God feels when He looks at the world and sees all the pain and suffering that the people on the earth have caused themselves.

Grace is probably the most obvious "Christian song" on the album. I think that it is pretty obvious that Bono is using Grace as a name for God. There are lots of references that relate to God. "takes the blame" is God sending His son Jesus into the world to die to pay the price of our sin. "removes the stain" is God taking away our sin when we believe in Him. "a thought that changed the world" is Jesus coming into the world so that we could have 2 choices, to believe in God or not rather than just having no way of getting to Heaven. "Grace finds goodness in everything" is saying that no matter who you are or what you have done God always loves you and can find goodness in you when others can't. "got time to talk" is saying that God is always there willing to listen and talk with you whenever you need Him. "Grace makes beauty out of ugly things" is saying more or less the same as "Grace finds goodness in everything".

I hope this has been helpful to you. There are loads more lyrics like this but it would take ages to talk about them. Oh, and "40" from the War album is based on Psalm 40 in the Bible and is pretty much just what it says.
