Robertson Davies put a lot of little things like this in his books. They are not explained but for those who know thier meaning, it adds to the book. He is 'testing' his readers if you will. For example, Dunny says he has been with all sorts of girls and he names off three girls "libby doe" is one of them.. as in libido (meaning sex drive another is "agnes day" which in latin (i think latin) means "lamb of the lord" signifying that she is sacraficial (dunny explains that she gives her body to him for sex) and then there is "gloria mundy" in latin meaning "joy of the world" she's the 'good time girl' always up for fun.. so really he means he was with all 3 types of girls, not just the 3 mentioned. So anyway, Liesl's last name..im not sure the EXACT translation but it relates to an ancient character who sacraficed himself to the gods in order to save his lover and turned into a hideous wolf.. along those lines.
