Its my position that the government's job ends at protecting its citizens from threats both foreign and domestic. We are entered into a sort of subscription with the government... we pay money (taxes) for the purpose of protection from each other and possible invasions or aggressive acts of other nations.
Agreed, this would mean that things like public roads, schools, and welfare programs (disability, unemployment, social security, etc.) are beyond the responsibility of government and we are given such privilages because we have decided to pay for them by-proxy. I, myself, have enjoyed public schooling and state/federal benifits for things like financial aids and cultural comforts, but that hardly means I believe it to be the true job of government.
I'm rather national-pride oriented and accept that I take advantage of so many state-sponsored things for which I pay taxes and appreciate both the government as it stands and the methods by which we have made available the alteration of it.
...I never much cared for flag-burning, for instance. As a political message, its loud--agreed. Nevertheless, I am an American. I accepted my citizenship at 18 and find it both honorable and necessary to respect and follow the law as it is.
