I had pretty much thought that a concentrated beam of light was a laser, which is not only possible but has been done. The two things about a light saber that are actually physically impossible are 1) how does the light know when to stop, if there's nothing at the other end to keep it from just projecting out to an infinite length? and 2) why is it visible from the side?

Of course, that's assuming that "light saber" is a technically accurate term implying that the thing actually *is* made of light at all. Personally, I think there's some mystical Force thingie involved, or else anybody could use a light saber, and not just Jedi as the movies imply.

Then, somebody somewhere should have managed to scrounge one from a dead Jedi and be going around to various cantinas trying to impress the locals with it--or more likely, copy the design and sell them to the kinds of nuts who want something that can cut through blast doors so they can kill people with it. But, what do I know.

It never pays to get too technical about this stuff, I guess.
