For the first time ever, Mariah looked down and into Chase's eyes. Her chin trembled slightly, like she was going to cry. She tucked herself up into a ball, letting her feet dangle. She rested her head on October's neck, and crossed her arms over her stomach. She closed her eyes. "I'm fine, I guess," Mariah said softly.

High-pitched yelps cut through the air like daggers, slicing the silence in shattered pieces. Mariah's head shot up quickly, and she twisted herself around on October's back. Dreadful Sorry and Raven, her two dobermans, raced up to October. They danced around the gentle stallion, gazing up at Mariah.

Mariah felt light-headed again. She looked down at the dobermans. She felt like she was up on a cloud. It looked so far down to the ground. She sucked in a strained breath of air, and began to shake violently. Mariah reached down, gripping October's mane for balance. She touched Chase's cheek with her finger. She couldn't put this on Chase now. Not after all he had done for her. She cared too much about him. Pulling her hand away, she signaled October into a canter, pulling away from Chase's side. She needed to think. To be alone. To leave this life behind.

When Mariah had gone a good distance from where she was out of sight, and probably out of mind, she slowed October to a trot. October cocked an ear back, chomping on the bit nervously. Dreadful finally caught up to Mariah and the stallion, her pink tongue dangling from her mouth. Mariah sighed and slowed October to a walk. She reined him around to a small creek, and walked him on the banks. Dreadful, being the foolish, playful mate to Raven, bounded ahead of Mariah, wagging her tail. She jumped into the creek, waded across, and shook off when she reached the bank. She gave a loud yap, and a playful bow, her hind wiggling furiously as she wagged her tail.

Mariah looked over at where Dreadful was yapping furiously. The dog stopped barking and rested her head on her paws, whimpering. Where she stood, butt up in the air, was not 10 feet from a giant willow tree. Mariah reined October around. She let him have his head as she asked him to walk across the creek. October cut through the creek without a problem. Mariah leaned forward as he pushed himself up on the rather steep opposite bank. The grey stallion snorted and pushed himself up on the grass. Mariah patted his neck, and dismounted.

Her head swimming, she twisted October's reins around her hands. Giving a soft sigh, she led October through the thick curtain of draping leaves. She unbridled the well mannered stallion, and let him crop the tender shoots of grass. Dreadful barked joyously, as if to say, "I told you it was cool!" Mariah gave the dog a quick rub on the head. Up against the smooth tree trunk was a large rock. Mariah went over and sat down. She leaned her head back, and rested it on the trunk.

Meanwhile, Raven took a wad of Chase's pants leg in his mouth, and started to pull. He gave a furious growl, as if to say, "Go find her before she gets hurt any worse!" He gave a firm tug on Chase's leg, but not too firm to knock him down. "Come on!" the doberman seemed to growl to Chase. "I'll sniff, you follow!" he whined, beginning to pull Chase impaiently.

Back in the barn, Chester chewed on his lip and stared off into space. Mike nodded, and agreed, "Probably. Well, now. Since Brandon's dead as door nail, Mariah will have a baby with a dead father! Wonderful!"

Chester move his eyes. "F---!" he muttered. He snapped out of his trance, and looked hard at Mike. "Who cares, Mike? Who gives a f---! What is done is done! Whether he forced her to get laid or not, you can't change it, stupid @ss! Let the matter drop! You ain't gonna change it by b!tching and complaining! And I swear to God, if you say anything offensive to her about the baby, I will crush you like a f---ing soda can, understand me?"

Mike's eyes widened, and his mouth opened in testimony. "Oooh!" he said. "You will?" he challenged.

Chester nodded, and stood up. "Didn't I just say that? I don't swear to God for my health, idiot!"

Mike stood up with Chester, and punched him across the cheek. Chester toppled backwards. Mike smiled and asked, "Try it again, Chester! I'm not in the mood for this!"

Chester glared at him. "Naw, ya think!" he snapped. He got up and walked briskly to the car. He yanked open the car door. Amber toppled out onto the ground. Chester looked down at her. "You and Ashleigh go play somewhere, okay?"
