Hepatitis Foundation International Presses Capitol Hill On Health Ed

CEDAR GROVE, N.J., April 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Hepatitis C has hit the
headlines identifying the devastating impact on the lives of celebrities,
healthcare workers, and especially prisoners and injection drug users. An
estimated 2.7 million Americans are currently infected by the hepatitis C
virus called the Silent Killer because it gives no warning for decades.
Ignorance is the companion of hepatitis viruses.
"Most people who are currently infected were unaware of the risks they
were taking that exposed them to this infectious disease and its serious
consequences", says Thelma King Thiel, CEO of the Hepatitis Foundation
International (HFI). By the time children learn about AIDS, hepatitis,
alcohol
and drug abuse, many have already participated in risky behaviors including
binge drinking, having unprotected sex, body piercing, and tattooing.
"Early elementary school education is the only way we can insure that
all
children receive information about taking responsibility for their own
health
care," says Thiel. Information about hepatitis and the liver have been
absent
in most school curricula over the years. As a result, parents as well as
teachers are not prepared to arm children with sufficient information to
know
what activities to avoid, or why and how to protect themselves.
Congressional leaders will join football Coach Dan Reeves, officials
from
the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Institutes of
Health, and healthcare providers dealing with children for a briefing on -
"The Missing Link in Preventing Hepatitis and Substance Abuse." Hosted by
the
Hepatitis Foundation International and the National Association of School
Nurses, the Briefing will take place in the Dirksen Senate Office Building,
Room G - 11 at 8:00 AM on Tuesday, May 7, 2002.
The goal of the Briefing is to highlight the need to provide preventive
health education in elementary schools and to be carried on throughout the
educational system. HFI is pressing for a collaboration of health
organizations, the Department of Health and Human Services, The Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention, and the U.S. Congress to meet this
challenge.
The Hepatitis Foundation International is a non-profit organization
located in New Jersey dedicated to combating viral hepatitis through
research,
patient advocacy, preventive education and the dissemination of accurate,
non-biased information.

Many advocates have testified in Washington. Thelma is by far not the only one. Ann Jesse from Hep C Connection has gone, ALF goes all the time, even Naomi Judd did a reputable job testifying. Now, if they'd only listen.

It didn't come out right. I meant it is not new that people are going to Congress.

I am still in a state of mental confusion, however that is probably the way that it is. Cant put together even a few sentences without making mistakes. Well, it is nice to be human again, and I am working on the cognitive abilities with reading and talking [though limited] LOL.

AGAPE all of my friends.

Respectfully:

William
