Subject:
liver biopsy
Yesterday I had the worst liver biopsy I've ever had!!I had one in '97 and it didn't hurt one bit.I was put in a twilight stage and it was over before I even knew it.This time this doctor made me stay awake! He gave me some fentanyl and that was it.I was of course numbed in my side, but when he took the sample I felt it all the way across my stomach.Like someone had just knocked the wind out of me.For two hours following that I couldn't take a deep breath. It took awhile to be able to start breathing right.
Today I am still in alot of pain. That's the last biopsy that son-of-b__ch will ever do on me!!What a difference a doctor makes. Thanks for letting me vent.

Oh Yvonne! How awful! -- Patsy, 14:14:37 05/04/02 Sat (Toronto-HSE-ppp3669386.sympatico.ca/65.95.179.139)
I hope hou gave him major shit--nobody should have to endure that---WTF is a doctor doing specializing in HCV, etc--is he some kind of sadist? If so, why doesn't he go into proctology? That's where the REAL fun is for doctors lol
Gentle hugs, Pats

Oh, Yvonne....I just hate to hear that, honey...soooo sorry for you!
I am wondering...so people that haven't had one yet don't get scared...this is the exception to the rule. And like I started to say....I am wondering if maaaaybe the Fentanyl didn't work like it should have on you because of your high tolerance to pain meds? Because as you know, Fentanyl is a synthetic heroin and is one of the strongest narctoic painkillers that we have. Did you fill him in on your Oxycontin history? The very first thing I do is let them know that I'm on Methadone and that I will need a dose that is EXTREMELY strong to "break thru" that.
How come you switched docs? And .....did he send you home with anything for pain? Perhaps you should call him?
Sending you *healing vibes*....
....much love, Carol

I didn't mean this to scare anyone,I know this is not the norm..... -- yvonne, 15:35:25 05/04/02 Sat (ip-64-38-160-80.dialup.ncia.com/64.38.160.80)
This wasn't my regular doc. This is a gastro...I've been seeing him for a few years and he knows my pain history..even good friends with my regular doc. When I told him last time I had a bio the doc made me at the very least comfortable before doing anything he said that wasn't possible because I had to be awake for this...not this guy...100mgs of fentanyl and a little novacain and whammy it was done. And no,he didn't send anything home with me!
I hope anyone that is considering this isn't scared away by my post..It wasn't intended for that..I think biopsies are essential and hope I didn't scare anyone.
Thanks for the healing vibes and the beautiful angel....hugs

Re: liver biopsy -- William, 14:45:44 05/04/02 Sat (spider-wf083.proxy.aol.com/205.188.195.201)
I am sorry to hear of your misfortune, however it is comforting to know that I am not crazy. My biopsy in 97' felt like someone had shoved a broom handle up my, well you know, and then broke it off. My legs shot straight out and the pain was intense. No meds for me at the time except for the local.
I am always surprised when people tell me that it is nothing. Bullshit. It hurt like hell, laid on my side for about three or four hours, and then came home to more pain. No meds were offered for the after effects.
I hate DR's. My current philosophy is physician [quack] heal thyself.
Oh, sorry. I hope that you feel better. Well, it is all behind us now anyway.
God bless you and may you find some comfort in the ensuing days.
AGAPE.
Respectfully:
William

They did the same sh*t to my hubby and they let me WATCH most of it. -- Cat, 15:16:37 05/04/02 Sat (01-030.046.popsite.net/64.24.231.30)
I left after I saw that pig sticker they were gonna use on him. And after what he went through pain wise and what I saw, as in the size of that contraption, they are just about gonna have to tie me down before I have that done.

I saw the pig sticker too,and asked about it.He said Oh don't worry it's only going in a little ways.Big fat liar!!Actually he showed me the sample and I couldn't believe how small it was. When you have yours done just make sure your doc takes proper care of you...hugs

I chickened out... -- Junobear, 11:41:34 05/05/02 Sun (216-220-252-203.midmaine.com/216.220.252.203)
...and at times have regretted I did. 'Back in the day' when ALT was considered a better marker of liver damage than it later turned out to be, normal ALT's were not always biopsied. 40 and below was considered normal and I was a 40. Phew, that was a close one...
I have to go with Cat on this one. Twilight, thanks but no thanks -- I want MIDNIGHT! I guess I would let them do it at this stage of the game if there was a good enough reason[like if I relapse...] but there will be hardball negotiation on the issue of adequate anesthesia. I want a heavy duty Versed cocktail consistent with my also high tolerance for pain medication or they can take their ice pick and shove it in their own liver [or elsewhere where the sun don't shine].
I drive ten hours round trip to go to a 'sleep dentist' and do not mind driving another ten for a 'sleep biopsy.'
I think some of these doctors think we 'deserve' the pain for getting this from IV drug use. Others are so afraid of the DEA for giving us anything they'd rather turn their backs and allow us suffer.
Money is an issue here. Medicaid and most insurance pays a flat 'reasonable' rate for the procedure, meaning the doctor gets paid the same whether he increases his cost of the procedure by knocking us out or not. Also, the less asleep we are, the quicker the procedure [for him], the more biopsies the doctor can do in a day and the more money he makes.
GRRRRR, I think I am having a flashback of riba-rage. There is no excuse for this procedure being painful!

to have one when needed. My doc told me I'd be 'comfortable'during my office visit to discuss the procedure. He is such a liar.Make sure your doc says more than just 'you'll be comfortable'.I take 80mgs of Oxycontin a day and all I got was 100mgs fentanyl.I even told him I missed my dose that morning because I figured he'd ,you know, take care of whatever I was going to need,HA!
And during the procedure I,too, was thinking if I had got this through transfusion if I would have been treated better. Thanks for taking time to talk to me...hugs

My procedure was painless, but then again everyone is different...I know better next time (if there is one) I will tell them that I received this during blood transfusion and see if I am not treated better. My problem was with the nurse after I told her the truth which she really did not need to know, later I found out. She turned into Nurse Ratchett and even wrote Boo-Hoo on biopsy report....what a ditz.

Wish I had said I got this from a transfusion from day one.I don't think lying is a good thing, but in this case I would have made an exception!!Hugs
