Subject: I chickened out...
In reply to: yvonne 's message, "liver biopsy" on 13:24:45 05/04/02 Sat

...and at times have regretted I did. 'Back in the day' when ALT was considered a better marker of liver damage than it later turned out to be, normal ALT's were not always biopsied. 40 and below was considered normal and I was a 40. Phew, that was a close one...

I have to go with Cat on this one. Twilight, thanks but no thanks -- I want MIDNIGHT! I guess I would let them do it at this stage of the game if there was a good enough reason[like if I relapse...] but there will be hardball negotiation on the issue of adequate anesthesia. I want a heavy duty Versed cocktail consistent with my also high tolerance for pain medication or they can take their ice pick and shove it in their own liver [or elsewhere where the sun don't shine].

I drive ten hours round trip to go to a 'sleep dentist' and do not mind driving another ten for a 'sleep biopsy.'

I think some of these doctors think we 'deserve' the pain for getting this from IV drug use. Others are so afraid of the DEA for giving us anything they'd rather turn their backs and allow us suffer.

Money is an issue here. Medicaid and most insurance pays a flat 'reasonable' rate for the procedure, meaning the doctor gets paid the same whether he increases his cost of the procedure by knocking us out or not. Also, the less asleep we are, the quicker the procedure [for him], the more biopsies the doctor can do in a day and the more money he makes.

GRRRRR, I think I am having a flashback of riba-rage. There is no excuse for this procedure being painful!

to have one when needed. My doc told me I'd be 'comfortable'during my office visit to discuss the procedure. He is such a liar.Make sure your doc says more than just 'you'll be comfortable'.I take 80mgs of Oxycontin a day and all I got was 100mgs fentanyl.I even told him I missed my dose that morning because I figured he'd ,you know, take care of whatever I was going to need,HA!

And during the procedure I,too, was thinking if I had got this through transfusion if I would have been treated better. Thanks for taking time to talk to me...hugs

My procedure was painless, but then again everyone is different...I know better next time (if there is one) I will tell them that I received this during blood transfusion and see if I am not treated better. My problem was with the nurse after I told her the truth which she really did not need to know, later I found out. She turned into Nurse Ratchett and even wrote Boo-Hoo on biopsy report....what a ditz.

Wish I had said I got this from a transfusion from day one.I don't think lying is a good thing, but in this case I would have made an exception!!Hugs
