Subject: Re: Up in Smoke [OT]

Just one of the many reasons for putting a stop to the smoking habit. It is easier said than done for this individual. I am truly addicted to cigarettes. The price should be enough to keep most away from these substances.

Well, at least this addiction allows me to function within the parameters of reality on a daily basis.

God bless you and keep you all in good health.

AGAPE.

Respectfully:

William

Elevated Alanine Aminotransferase, Smoking and Drinking Linked in Hepatitis
C
A DGReview of :"Smoking and Alanine Aminotransferase Levels in Hepatitis C
Virus Infection: Implications for Prevention of Hepatitis C Virus
Progression"
Archives of Internal Medicine

Smoking and alcohol use are independently associated with elevated alanine
aminotransferase (ALT) levels among individuals who are seropositive for
anti-hepatitis C virus antibody, but not among those who are seropositive
for Hepatitis B surface antigen.

So say researchers at the Universities of National Cheng Kung in Tainan and
National Yang-Ming in Taipei, Taiwan, China.

A cross-sectional sample of 6095 residents aged 35 or above were enrolled
from a community in which hepatitis B and C viral infections were
hyperendemic. The levels of serum ALT, hepatitis B surface antigen (HbsAg)
and anti-hepatitis C virus antibody (anti-HCV) were assayed. In addition,
the factors for elevation of Alt levels (defined as 40 U/L or more), in
subjects whose hepatitis infection statuses differed, were determined by
multivariate logistic regression.

Subjects with elevated ALT levels were more likely to be seropositive for
anti-HCV, male, and seropositive for HBsAg. They were also more like to
drink alcohol, smoke, and to have undergone blood transfusion. The odds of
elevated ALT levels were seven times higher for the anti-HCV seropositive
patients who smoked one or more packs of cigarettes per day and frequently
drank alcohol than for those who did not.

The prevalence of elevated ALT levels in individuals who were seropositive
for HbsAg or anti HCV were 11.1 and 30.8 percent respectively. Prevalence of
elevated ALT was 3.0 among individuals who were seronegative for both
infections.

Patients who are seropositive for anti-HCV should be strongly advised
against smoking and drinking alcohol to avoid any risk for aggravating liver
dysfunction, the researchers say.

Thanks, Clarence. Actually, I'm slugging thru a (British/Canadian) book, Allen Carr's "The Easy Way to Quit Smoking". I'll let y'all know if it is, and if I do!! --sus
p.s. there are tapes that come with it. I had to have my Used Book store order it, 'cause it's "furren" from overseas or over borders!! Unfortunately, the car I have now only plays CDs -- I miss my recovery tapes!!
