M'lady, if you say no more, you compromise my happiness more than you know. I am by no means 'happy.' Not yet. There is much to be fixed yet, before that can even begin to - well, begin. You know by now how I feel. You must see...

Gaze glances away, helpless to explain himself. He didn't want to say anything to cause her to feel obligated, one way or the other. But he wanted her to understand that, if she was so concerned for his 'happiness', as she said, that he could only be happy if he was somehow in connection with her, even in the least amount.
